打肿脸充胖子（dǎ zhǒng liǎn chōng pàng zǐ）
Translation:
Beat up your own face and make it swell so that you look like fat. This is a popular Chinese expression to mean you choose to believe you are more than you really are even by bringing hardship on yourself. I don’t know why people like being fat I guess in the old times, when you were fat at least it meant you had a lot of food to eat when the food was scarce for most of people. Did it mean success back then?
Today I just realize that there is a deep wisdom well in Chinese language and when I look back at the things I do I appreciate this expression a lot.
